The Akihabara Daibiru Building
Helping to Make Akihabara
a Global Tech Hub
The Thinking Behind the Name "Crossfield"
Construction on the Akihabara Daibiru Building commenced in May 2003. While work was underway, efforts were undertaken to promote the project’s goal to the public. One such instance was the Akiba Future Forum, which was organized by three of the companies involved in the project (Daibiru, NTT Urban Development Corporation, and Kajima Corporation). At a second forum held in April 2004, “Akihabara Crossfield” was announced as the official name for the business complex that contained the Akihabara Daibiru Building and Akihabara UDX. The name comes from the fact that Akihabara, where the Yamanote Line and Sobu Line intersect, is a place where people and information from various domains (fields) come together. This intersection (cross) is used to create new forward-looking technology-based businesses.
The forum was followed by a gathering attended by Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, the initiator of the Akihabara project. His involvement demonstrated the high expectations that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government had for the project.
