The Epoch-Making Dojima Daibiru Building

Construction began in July 1982 and was completed in September 1984. The project was completed with the handover to ANA Enterprises on October 1. The hotel opened on October 18 as the ANA Hotel Sheraton Osaka. The landscape surrounding the Dojima Daibiru Building and Club Kansai received a special award at the Sixth City of Osaka Scenic Architecture Awards—also known as the Osaka Scenic Architecture Awards—in December 1986. That award is given out each year by the prefectural and municipal governments of Osaka to honor outstanding cityscapes that are aesthetically outstanding and improve the surrounding environment in order to promote the creation of beautiful, distinctive, and dignified cityscapes. The special award is given to buildings that break new ground or add new meaning in the field of architecture.

Earlier, in June 1986, the Dojima Daibiru Building and Club Kansai received the 1986 Award for Buildings With Accompanying Greenery from the mayor of Osaka in recognition of their contribution to urban beautification and for combining their greenification efforts. This was another example of Daibiru being recognized for its greenification efforts, which included the Shin-Daibiru Building.

The Dojima Daibiru Building was very significant for Daibiru. In addition to this being our first commercial building that wasn’t for offices, it was also our first time building a skyscraper with more than 10 floors. It was also our first experiment with air rights in order to make the construction of a skyscraper possible. For that reason, the Dojima Daibiru Building will go down in history as a building with epoch-making significance for Daibiru.
