The Daibiru-Honkan Building, A Pioneer in Rental Buildings

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Daibiru-Honkan Building was held in April 1924, and construction was completed in September 1925. Although the overall design was simple, it was also aesthetically pleasing, with bold designs and liberal use of carvings. It was highly praised for “outstanding value in terms of practical value, economic value, and artistic value.” This pioneering building became the epitome of Osaka office buildings. What the Marunouchi Building did for eastern Japan, the Daibiru-Honkan Building did for western Japan.

After its completion, Watanabe commented, “This building stands out among Japanese rental offices, which are 100 steps behind those of Western countries, attaining an international standard as a leading building in every respect. The Osaka Building is also a rare success in terms of management.” The Daibiru-Honkan Building was a significant departure for our company, and for Watanabe, it was a masterpiece that heralded a turning point in his career as an architect.
