Section 2. Expanding Our Business

1. The Akihabara Station Redevelopment Project and the Completion of the Akihabara Daibiru Building

In March 2005, the Akihabara Daibiru Building in zone I, which Daibiru was responsible for, was completed as part of Akihabara Crossfield, a tech hub being developed by Daibiru, NTT Urban Development Corporation, and Kajima Corporation. Kajima Corporation was responsible for the design, construction was done by a joint venture consisting of Kajima Corporation and Obayashi Corporation, and the project was supervised by Nikken Sekkei Ltd. Three years after these three companies, Daibiru included, won a competition for the sale of land near Akihabara Station owned by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, construction of the facility that would form the core of the Akihabara tech hub was completed.

The Akihabara Daibiru Building had a site area of 4,182 m2. It used steel-frame construction with 31 aboveground floors and two underground floors. The second floor included a learning and creativity zone befitting a tech hub as well as a convention hall, and the fifth floor had a conference floor and an industry-academia exchange zone. Floors 6 through 15 were required to be occupied by tenants that would contribute to industry-academia collaboration functions, including tech-related companies, universities, and public research institutes, while floors 16 and up were occupied by Hitachi, Ltd.

The opening ceremony for Akihabara Crossfield, which took place on March 31, was attended by then Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, then Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda, and Yasufumi Tanahashi, then the Minister of State for Information Technology, reflecting the high expectations for this key facility for tech-focused industry-academia collaboration.
