Section 3. Disaster Preparedness and Risk Management

2. Daibiru's Disaster Preparedness Measures

  • The Toranomon Daibiru Building, which was reinforced to increase earthquake resistance

Japan is considered to be a disaster-prone country and has suffered from many natural disasters. Japan has experienced not only major earthquakes but also typhoons and torrential rains on numerous occasions, causing extensive damage in many parts of the country. In light of these risks, Daibiru has not only constructed its buildings to be earthquake resistant but has also undertaken earthquake-proofing upgrades on newly acquired buildings. One example of this was the earthquake reinforcement construction carried out on the Shinjuku Daibiru Building, which was acquired in February 2000. Construction began in May 2001 to reinforce the building in various ways, and the work was completed in February 2002. Since then, Daibiru has continued to promote disaster preparedness on the basis of its BCP (business continuity plan). The Toranomon Daibiru Building was acquired in 2005 and renovated in 2009 to improve its earthquake resistance through seismic braces wrapped with carbon fiber; and the new Shin-Daibiru Building, which was completed in March 2015, included generator upgrades to extend the power supply time from 24 hours to 72 hours, the conversion of some electrical circuits for the large fourth-floor conference rooms (both lighting and electrical outlets) to generator-powered circuits, the installation of generator-powered circuits for auto-flushing toilets and urinals, and the installation of emergency drainage tanks with 10 days of capacity.

We also formed a Safety and Crisis Control Committee in October 2006 in order to implement more comprehensive disaster preparedness measure as part of full-fledged efforts to address office building safety and crisis preparedness. The committee was formed to deliberate and discuss matters related to the formulation of basic policies and systems for safety and crisis preparedness, matters related to the implementation of safety and crisis preparedness measures, matters related to preventing crisis recurrence, and other matters related to safety and crisis preparedness.
